In order to expand production capacity, Chinese manufacturers are actively building new panel factories and expanding the purchase of flat panel display FPD production equipment. According to the DisplaySearch survey statistics of NPD, a market research institution, from 2014 to 2016, 16 new panel factories may be added and put into production in mainland China. Among them, some factories have begun to enter the plant construction and machine equipment planning process, but some factories are still in the evaluation and planning stage.
With the continuous planning and construction of new panel factories, the cost of flat panel display production equipment by Chinese manufacturers will continue to grow. In 2010, China's purchase of flat panel display production equipment accounted for only about 22% of the world's total, but it is estimated that in 2014 and 2015, the purchase proportion will exceed 70%.
The brand-new panel factories that Chinese manufacturers have actively planned and constructed in recent years are mainly concentrated in the 6th generation line and the 8th generation line. Especially with the support of the government, the scale of the 8th generation line panel factories of Chinese panel manufacturers has expanded rapidly. Not only that, South Korean factories Samsung and LG are also investing in China to build 8-generation lines (considering the issue of panel import tariff adjustment). NPD Display Search believes that if this continues, China will soon threaten South Korea's 8-generation line leadership.
In response to the continuous growth of the market for intelligent mobile devices, such as smart phones and tablet computers, the investment of Chinese panel factories is not limited to the 8th generation line, but also includes some new production lines with smaller scale but higher technology and product technology, including the 5.5 generation and 6th generation LTPS low temperature polysilicon TFT production lines, oxide TFT metal oxide thin film transistor panel production lines, OLED organic light emitting diode production lines, etc.
From the perspective of individual manufacturers, the most radical and largest manufacturer in China's panel industry is Beijing BOE BOE. Because BOE has successfully used the preferential policies provided by the governments of all parts of China to realize its investment plan, including Beijing, Chengdu, Hefei, Ordos, Chongqing and other places. Now BOE has 6 panel factories (B1 to B6).
Among them, BOE B1 factory is the 5th generation line and B2 factory is the 4th generation line (730 × 920mm). These two generation lines produce small and medium-sized panels for smartphones and tablets. B3 plant has been put into production since the end of 2011. it is BOE's first 6-generation line. jingdong founder is planning to expand the production capacity of this 6-generation line from the existing (investment volume) 90K/month to 110K/month. In addition, B3 also plans to add another 10 K/M oxide TFT capacity for the production of high-resolution panels, paving the way for the production of OLED backplanes.
B4, located in Beijing, is BOE's first 8th generation line, which started production in early 2012. BOE plans to expand its production capacity from 100K/month to 125K/month, mainly producing notebook computers, LCD display panels, and (7-inch) tablet computer panels. As BOE will build more 8-generation lines in the future, the 8-generation line capacity of B4 plant may be converted to the production of smart handheld device panels.
BOE's Hefei B5 Factory is the company's second 8-generation line, which was just opened at the end of 2013. According to the plan, BOE plans to expand the production capacity of Hefei's 8th generation line from 30K/month to 60K/month to produce 4K white OLED panels. As for Erdos's B6, it is a 5.5 generation line (1300 × 1500mm), focusing on LTPS and OLED technology. It is currently in the production stage, but there are still many technical challenges. Among them, the OLED TV panel adopts white OLED technology, and the OLED panel of the intelligent handheld device adopts RGB OLED technology.
B7 is the latest 6-generation LTPS TFT production line to be invested by BOE. It is located in Hefei and has a planned production capacity of 25K/month. It will mainly be used to produce high-end high-resolution tablet computers and smart phone panels. It is expected to be put into production by the end of 2015. B8 is BOE's 3rd 8th generation line after B4 and B5, with a planned monthly production capacity of 30K/month, located in Chongqing. This production line will be put into a-Si (amorphous silicon), oxide TFT, AMOLED and other technologies.
B9 is the 10.5 generation line in BOE's planning, but the entire investment plan has not yet been finalized. It is reported that the planned B9(2900 × 3320mm) economic cutting products include 37-inch, 48-inch, 63-inch, 73-inch and other panel economic cutting. Whether it will be put into production in 2016 is still a question mark.
Huaxing Optoelectronics CSOT currently has a 8-generation line in Shenzhen to import volume production, the volume of 120K/month. It is understood that Huaxing Optoelectronics has decided to build a new 8-generation line panel factory in Shenzhen, and construction started recently. It is expected to be mass-produced by the end of 2015. Its production technology is the same as the current 8-generation line, which adopts a-Si TFT technology and is targeted at the TV market.
In addition, in response to TCL Group's development strategy in smart devices, Huaxing Optoelectronics also plans to build a new 6-generation line AMOLED panel factory in Wuhan, which will mainly be put into handheld device application panels. Huaxing Optoelectronics also recently demonstrated AMOLED panel samples with a maximum size of 30 inches.
CEC-Panda CLP Panda in China LCD panel factory, regardless of technology and product structure are slow to develop. At present, only one Nanjing 6-generation line under CLP Panda has been mass-produced and the film volume is 83K/month. However, CEC-Panda is carrying out technical cooperation with Sharp. Following the construction of a new 8-generation line and the introduction of Sharp Oxide technology, the monthly film production volume of the new factory is planned to be 60K/month (to be gradually expanded to 120K/month in the future) and is expected to be put into production in 2015.
