At present, the OLED TV market is monopolised by LG display company. Samsung launched the 55-inch curved OLED HDTV S9C in 2013. Although the display performance is good, the production cost is high and the price is close to 55000 yuan. Subsequently, Samsung Electronics suspended the production of OLED and focused on LED TV products.
But recently, Samsung has shown its intention to return to the OLED TV market. South Korean media quoted people familiar with the matter as saying that data from the industry showed that Samsung is preparing to invest about 4 trillion won (about US $3.3 billion) in OLED technology. If this news is true, Samsung OLED TV will be available in 2018 at the latest.
It is reported that Samsung previously suspended OLED TV production is mainly due to the low yield. Display industry analysts at IHS, a research organization, said that the early 1080p resolution OLED display had a yield of only 10%, while the current yield has exceeded 90%.
It is reported that Samsung believes that the current price of OLED TV panels is still too expensive, and the company intends to significantly reduce production costs by using new technologies to ensure that it has a price competitive advantage after entering the OLED TV market, so as to seize the dominant power.
